British Invasion

Apparently, "stripped-back cycles popular with couriers are taking London by storm." The Guardian style correspondent, Alice Fisher in her article, "No brakes, no gears: the latest bike craze", attributes fixed gear culture's origins to the Caribbean immigrants who plied their skills as bicycle couriers in New York city during the 1980's. Although Fisher points out urban cycling isn't without it's inherent dangers, exemplified by the death of experienced cyclist Matthew Manger-Lynch in a Chicago Alleycat, the popularity of fixed cycling is nevertheless a socially responsible and fashionable trend.
